A collar puts the whole walk on two inches of throat.
On a big dog that is a thick, muscled neck. On a 4 lb Yorkie or a 7 lb Chihuahua it is most of the neck there is, right over the windpipe. Toy breeds and flat-faced breeds have small, soft airways. So the instruction from the vet does not change from breed to breed: harness, not collar. Keep the throat out of it.
Plain version of what your vet meant: the leash should pull on the chest, never on the neck. Any harness that tightens around the neck when the dog pulls has missed the point.
They are a collar with extra straps.
Pick up the average small-dog harness and look for the loop that goes over the head. When the dog lunges after a squirrel, that loop takes the load, exactly where the collar sat. Front-clip "no pull" harnesses are built for a 65 lb Labrador; they turn the dog sideways. A 9 lb Pomeranian with a sensitive throat needs neither.

Nothing crosses the throat.

Two leg holes. The dog steps in with the front paws. No loop is pushed over the ears or pulled around the neck, which matters twice a day for a dog that hates things near her face.
- 2The chest plate takes the pull.
A padded, breathable mesh plate sits across the sternum, the broadest and best-protected part of a small dog. When she lunges, the load spreads across that plate.

The buckle and the leash D-ring sit between the shoulder blades. The leash pulls from above and behind. The front of the neck stays open on every step.

Before you order
Will she slip out of it?
A step-in vest closes over the back with a buckle and adjusts snug. Two fingers should fit under the back strap, no more. A vest fitted that way stays on through a lunge. A vest two sizes too big does not, which is why the size chart is on this page twice.
Does it work for a cat or a kitten?
Yes. XS and S fit cats under 13 lb. Same step-in fit, same back closure.
My Frenchie is 26 lb. Which size?
L. Measure the chest girth to be sure; a barrel-chested 26 lb Frenchie is usually 20.5 to 21.5 in around, which is L.
Can I still use her ID tag?
The bundle includes a slide-on tag that sits on the back strap. If you have a tag you love, it hangs off the D-ring at the back, away from the throat.
How do I wash it?
Hand wash in cool water, air dry flat. The mesh dries in an hour.
